Blackberry 10 SDK reveals tight Evernote integration

Blackberry 10 SDK reveals tight Evernote integration

The Blackberry 10 gold SDK release has revealed an interesting tidbit for Evernote partakers: the memory-prodding app seems to be tightly enmeshed with RIM's upcoming OS. It's one of the so-called Notebook options listed under the "App Integration" heading, which let you organize "actionable and non-actionable items into separate folders or topics." Evernote is listed as one of those options, and will let you sync up and access your account with Blackberry 10 devices, according to the documentation. That app is already available across all other major platforms, letting you organize documents with audio, video, photos, websites and, um, text -- then sync everything up in the cloud. Considering Evernote's recent foray into the business side of things, having the app built-in might be a nice pitch to RIM's core userbase when the new OS is finally launched.

CEOs step up pressure on Obama, Congress for deal

(AP) ? The nation's top corporate executives are stepping up pressure on Congress and on President Barack Obama to negotiate a deal to avoid a fiscal cliff, warning that failure will result in "significant negative economic, employment, and social consequences."

The CEOs, all members of the Business Roundtable, delivered letters to the White House and to congressional leaders urging a compromise that includes revenue, even if it means raising tax rates, and structural and benefit changes to social programs. Their letter says spending reductions must be a "multiple of increased revenues."

The 158 CEOs include Boeing Co.'s James McNerney, David Cote of Honeywell International Inc. and Jeffrey Immelt of General Electric Co.

Separately, top home building executives also wrote to Obama and House Speaker John Boehner calling for an agreement.

1211-lindsay-lohan-commr-godfrey-daily-journal-4bLindsay Lohan may have done it again ... dodged a jail bullet by the luck of the judicial draw.
?
We broke the story ... Lindsay will be arraigned today on 3 criminal charges -- including lying to cops -- in connection with her car accident on Pacific Coast Highway last June.? We know the judge who will arraign her -- Commissioner Jane Godfrey -- will formally revoke her probation during the hearing.? As you know, she's on probation for the jewelry heist case.

The Commissioner will order a formal hearing, and if the evidence shows it's more likely than not that LiLo committed a crime, the Commish could send her to jail for as long as 245 days.

Now the good news for Lindsay.? One source very familiar with the Commish tells TMZ ... "Godfrey is not a big jail person."?

Get this ... Commissioner Godfrey presides over Drug Court, in which she hears case after case involving people with serious drug cases.? Godfrey strongly favors counseling over jail, to the point she has a graduation ceremony for people who complete the program and digs into her own pocket to buy little gifts for the graduates ... like Starbucks cards.

And the Commish presides over Homeless Court ... where she deals with homeless people who have committed crimes and gets them help to rehabilitate them, instead of throwing them in jail.

Maybe Godfrey could start Night Club Court.? She does have the perfect defendant.

The L.A. County Dept. of Children and Family Services barged into Brooke Mueller's home the night following her OD, and turned the place upside down looking for drugs ... this according to Brooke.

Brooke is telling friends, DCFS investigators showed up hours after she returned from the hospital December 7th -- as we reported, Brooke was unresponsive after taking way too much Adderall.

Brooke says investigators tore her house apart for six hours, searching for signs of drug use, but finding nothing except a lone cigarette butt on the floor of the master bathroom.

We're told DCFS grilled Brooke ... to find out if she smoked indoors with the children present. We're told Brooke told investigators she smokes in her bathroom with windows open, far from her kids.

We're told DCFS woke up her twin boys and asked them questions like, "Has mommy ever touched you?" They also checked the boys for signs of physical abuse ... again finding nothing.

As we first reported, the kids are now with Charlie's second ex-wife, Denise Richards, while Brooke's in rehab.

We're told Brooke's pissed over the way DCFS conducted the investigation --? calling it "harassing."

The Season 7 "Idol" champ recently sold off his Beachwood Canyon pad -- which has a killer view of the Hollywood sign -- for a cool $1,365,0000.

The 3,000-sqaure-foot house is pretty amazing too ... it's rockin' 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, wrap-around decks, and a FULL recording studio.

But best of all, it features a specially-designed dog yard -- which non-dog owners would call ... a yard.

The guys from "Pawn Stars" struck it rich with their hit show? -- and then turned their backs on the agents who brokered their initial contracts ... that according to a new lawsuit filed by the jilted talent agency.

The suit, filed by Venture IAB in L.A. County Superior Court ... claims all 3 Harrisons and Chumlee inked deals in 2007 and 2009 for the agency to represent them -- before "Pawn Stars" started airing on The History Channel.

According to the suit, in January 2010 -- 6 months after the show hit the air -- another agent and 2 'Pawn' execs ... convinced the cast to terminate their deal with Venture IAB.

In the suit, Venture claims the execs -- Mary Donahue and Nancy Dubuc -- "intended to disrupt" the agency's deal with the guys so their "friend and agent" could sign them.

Venture IAB is suing The History Channel, the agent and the execs for more than $5 million in damages.

As we previously reported, a very similar suit was filed by an ex-manager -- but that one named the Harrisons and Chumlee as defendants.

The L.A. City Attorney isn't wasting any time ... TMZ has learned, prosecutors have already filed papers asking the court to revoke Lindsay Lohan's probation.

TMZ broke the story ... the L.A. City Attorney had been planning to file docs asking the judge to revoke her probation in her jewelry heist case ...?but now, it's official. As sources told us, prosecutors are "out for blood."

According to the L.A. City Attorney's office, prosecutors want Lindsay's probation revoked because of the criminal charges recently filed against her in Santa Monica, stemming from her car accident on PCH this summer ... after which she lied to cops about being behind the wheel.

But the City Attorney's move is just a formality -- the judge doesn't need prosecutors' input ... she'll be revoking Lindsay's probation on her authority alone.

Lindsay is set to be arraigned tomorrow morning on 3 misdemeanor counts -- lying to cops, obstruction, and reckless driving.

As we previously reported ... 21-year-old Alicia Guastaferro -- who was on the show back in '08 -- was arrested in New York after cops caught her half naked with a 54-year-old male lawyer .. in the back seat of a car.

But Guastaferro got some good news Tuesday night ... the District Attorney's Office dropped the prostitution charge in the "interest of justice" -- aka extreme leniency.

Alicia's not out of the woods yet ... she still faces several other charges from the same incident: criminal impersonation, criminal possession and possession of a controlled substance.

She's due back in court March 12.

PNoy admin got the sin tax reforms it wanted ? BIR chief Henares ...

The Department of Finance and the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) are "happy" with the final version of the sin tax bill even if the measure fell short of the Aquino administration's revenue target of P60 billion, BIR chief Kim Jacinto-Henares said Tuesday.

?

The bill is expected to be ratified by Congress later Tuesday.

?

In an interview at the sidelines of the signing of the bicameral conference report on the sin tax bill, Henares said the department and the bureau were able to institute the reforms they wanted through the measure.

?

She said this included "the removal of annexes, the removal of the prize freeze classification, and the indexation.

?

"We got all three... So, for us those are the structural reforms that we were really pushing for. ?We're happy in that sense," she added.

?

?

"Of course, when we went in we were targeting P60 billion... It went down... but that is part of the legislative [process] ? you cannot get everything that you go in for," she said.

?

In a compromise, the Senate and House of Representatives agreed to excise tax collections of ?P33.96 billion for 2013, P42.82 billion for 2014, P50.63 billion for 2015, P56.86 billion for 2016, and P64.18 billion for 2017, or P248.49 billion in five years.

?

"Actually, yung amount siguro hindi kami dapat ang tanungin kasi dapat health [sector] yun. ?When we went [for the] P60 billion [it was] because... of the health [sector]," she said.

?

"So, if the Department of Health is happy with it, then we're fine... For us the reform was the first three that we mentioned and we got it so we're happy in that sense," she added.

?

Bill sponsor Sen. Franklin Drilon said 80 percent of the remaining balance of the additional revenue ? after deducting the allocations under Republic Act 7171 and Republic Act 8240 ? will be allocated for universal healthcare under the National Health Insurance Program, for attaining the Millennium Development Goals, and for health awareness campaign.?

?

The 20-percent balance will be allocated for medical assistance and health enhancement facilities program nationwide based on political and district subdivisions. The Health Department will set the yearly needs for these allocations.

?

Drilon said 69 percent of the revenue allotments would come from the excise tax on tobacco products and 31 percent from alcoholic beverages, instead of the 60-40 earlier proposed by the Senate or the 87-13 by the House. ? VS, GMA News

RN34 ? Sociology of Religion

Coordinators: Anne-Sophie Lamine < anne-sophie.lamine@misha.fr>

University of Strasbourg, France

Heidemarie Winkel < hwinkel@uni-potsdam.de>

University of Postdam, Germany

Religion has often been understood as a response to personal, social or cultural crisis. Classical scholars, such as Peter L. Berger and Max Weber, pointed out that it provides a theodicy of good and evil ? an account that gives ultimate meaning in a meaningless world. Religions, Stark and Bainbridge (1985) contend, are other-worldly compensators for individuals in crisis ? for those who are deprived from this-worldly rewards. Even advocates of the secularization thesis often acknowledge that crisis and rapid social change in society temporarily motivate the popularity of religion (Bruce 1997).

But religion, once considered to be in crisis under the secularizing powers of modernity, is alive and well in Europe. More than that: religion seems to thrive on what can now be called the crisis of modernity. Modern science, the nation state, capitalism, unrestricted consumption and the globalizing economy, have lost much of their credibility and plausibility in many European countries. In this cultural climate, the voices of traditional religious groups grow louder whereas, some say, we are witnessing a massive turn to holistic forms of spirituality (e.g., Campbell 2007). The atheist-secular worldview is more than ever contested by a fraction of Muslims, Christian creationists, Buddhists and other religious groups while a mirror-like process of anti-identification gives rise to alarmist discourses about the return of religions and particularly on the danger of the ?islamization of Europe?. Religion has once again become salient in the re-formation of identity and the construction of imagined communities: uprooted from tradition, modern individuals in identity crisis search for new (religious) values and meanings whereas some European nation states align themselves with their Christian heritage, long-standing traditions and religious pasts. Religion, then, can not easily be understood as the ?irrational? Other of modernity ? it is instead a common and valid response to the growing crisis of modernity. Jurgen Habermas (2005), once a furious critic of religion, argued from this perspective that intellectuals should include religious partners in the ?rational? conversation about modernity since both share a growing critique on the maladies of modernity.

Motivated by these observations, the Research Network Sociology of Religion calls for papers on crisis, critique and change in relation to religion. Particularly papers are welcomed that discuss the following topics:

01RN34. Studies dealing with religion in crisis,

i.e. the way religious traditions such as Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and the like ? re-structure their organizations, beliefs, and practices and adopt, negotiate or resist processes of modernization, secularization and disenchantment.

02RN34. Studies dealing with the ways religion provides answers to existential crisis and, particularly, the crisis of modernity

? i.e. how and why Islam, Christianity and other religious-spiritual groups formulate a critique of and alternative to modern science, capitalism, mass-consumption and individualism.

03RN34. Studies dealing with the way crisis increases the salience of religious identities and cultural polarization,

i.e., in what particular ways religion gives meaning in everyday life and if, how and why religious identity-formations induce processes of inclusion and exclusion; social cohesion and religious conflict.

04RN34. Studies focusing on the way religion changes the modern world in Europe and beyond,

i.e., how rapid social changes motivate the appeal and popularity of religion and if, how and why such religions transform private and public domains in Europe.

Sport and religion/spirituality

(Chairs: Davide Sterchele; Stef Aupers & Hubert Knoblauch)

Whereas the analogy between sport and religion has been criticized by many scholars mainly because of the lack (or low relevance) of the transcendent dimension in traditional sport practices, the recent sociological elaborations of the concept of spirituality seems to provide new interesting tools for interpreting the emerging forms of bodily movement. At the same time, the study of the analogies between traditional sports and institutionalized religions still generates relevant sociological insights.

In order to contribute to these streams of analysis and to open new horizons for further studies, the ESA research networks ?Sociology of Culture?, ?Society and Sports?, and ?Sociology of Religion?, invite potential contributors to submit abstracts to the joint session on ?Sport and religion/spirituality?. The session will thus provide a forum for exchange and sharing among sociologists of culture, sport and religion, who deal with these themes from different but overlapping perspectives.

07JS34. RN34 Joint session with RN07 Sociology of Culture

Cultures of Religion ? Religious Cultures

(Chairs: Hubert Knoblauch & Regine Herbrik)

?Religious Culture is quite frequently used, particularly in the French context (?culture religieuse?) relating both, to the general as well as to the specific religious patterns of culture. It may serve well not only to address empirical questions concerning the increasing cultural significance of religion within Europe as well as globally; it may also connect recent theoretical approaches in the sociology of culture on the one hand with approaches in the sociology of religion. For the joint session we invite, therefore, contributions addressing both empirical as well as theoretical issues concerning ?religious cultures?.

11JS34. RN34 Joint session with RN11 Sociology of emotions

Affects and Emotions in the Field of Religion

(Chairs: Stef Aupers & C?cile Vermot)

Generations of scholars of theology and religious studies have viewed affects, emotions, and religion as closely related issues. What can be said about the certain shapes, characteristics and forms of this relationship in present times? How far is the research on emotions especially crucial for the understanding of religious life in Europe and for the coexistence, or even living together, of different confessions? What role do ?emotional regimes? (Riis/Woodhead) or ?feeling rules? (Hochschild) play with regard to the formation of emotional cultures both in religious groups and communities and with regard to the quest for salvation or spirituality of individual persons?

20JS34. RN34 Joint session with RN20 Qualitative Methods

Qualitative Research on Religion

(Chairs: Regine Herbrik & Bernt Schnettler)

We also encourage participants to present papers concerned with methodological questions related to the specific problems of empirical research in the Study of Religions. Can we transfer methods from other fields of research to the sociology of religion or do we need special, field-specific methods? What can we learn from methods used in neighbouring disciplines? Which sets of methods can be recommended for empirical analyses targeting micro-macro issues in understanding religion? What role does the gender issue play in this? We are especially interested in papers reporting empirical research finding in the sociology of religion using qualitative research methods in combination with methodological reflections.

34JS35. RN34 Joint session with RN35 Sociology of Migration

Migrant religions as a challenge to European identities

(Chairs: Berta Alvarez-Miranda & Heidemarie Winkel)

Already in classical sociological theory, religion functioned as a looking glass of change in times of crisis. At present, migrant religions are challenging and contributing to a critique of European identities. How do various European contexts accommodate migrant religions? What are the experiences, attitu?des and demands of their followers? How does the treatment of matters related to Islam inform on European identities and their current transformations? What conceptual and
