Character profile guidelines

- Try to be realistic within the setting. A thirteen-year-old stablehand won?t be a master swordsman, a beggar won?t charm his way into every brothel in town, and the blindingly beautiful Id-Heran princess won?t be good at cooking, singing, sword fighting, blacksmithing, caber tossing, NASCAR racing, and catching bloody unicorns.

- No Mary Sues. People have flaws, and the world does not revolve around them. Glance over this if you?re not certain of the term.

- Don?t create a fighting idiot.[b] This is a roleplay about countries at war. Naturally, there will be combat, but if you intend to chain endless fighting scenes together, you?re in the wrong place. You cannot trade your ability to put on pants for +1 to damage. The story will be action-driven as much as character-driven, and the war is larger than any individual action taken in it.

- [b]On magicians: It is not expected or particularly encouraged for you to play a magician. They have pretty restricted lives, and the magic system is rather rigid. The presence of magicians on both sides of the war levels the playing field, so normal fighters (or even diplomats) are perfectly capable of making a difference.

- You may omit information from your character profile if you wish to keep certain information a mystery. Secret pasts would be a good example of this. A hidden set of lock picks would not ? anything that might seem like an ass pull goes on your profile.

Notes on character skeleton

Picture and avatar: A picture is not required, but it is encouraged. Illustrations are preferred over photos. Do not spend too much time looking for one ? your text description will take precedence over anything else. Do try to find (or make) a recognizable 100x100 avatar for your character.

Name: English, Germanic or fantasy names are all allowed. It has to be pronounceable in the English tongue though. If you're a commoner, you're not going to have an overly long name. Only Spelheim citizens have a last name. Id-Herans may also state the name of their father (son of, daughter of).

Race: Sile, Kanloi, Citian Human, Id-Heran Human.

Sex: Male, female or undisclosed. In the human society, some women may impersonate men for safety or work opportunities, and spies may be in disguise.

Age: Try to be realistic, in relation to skill set and background.

Appearance: Try to avoid subjective terms in your description. Your character may be conventionally beautiful [for their race], but she may not be attractive [to everyone]. Some characters may fear beauty, and different people and races have different standards. As for racial differences: blond characters generally have Id-Heran blood, while red hair originates in Spelheim. Black hair can always be tracked back to the Socharev.

Personality: please provide a clear personality. ?She is timid but will get angry at you when you insult her enough? isn?t a personality, it?s common sense. Characters with conviction or motivation are preferred ? I?d rather not have isolated hermits that look forward to dying alone. Room for character development is encouraged. Check the other characters for any disturbing overlap in personality.

History: what made your character into the person (s)he is today? Arranging previous relationships with other characters is encouraged if appropriate. Two Citians needn?t know each other, but two dragon riders probably would.

Magic: no magic potential, latent potential, or awakened mage. If the latter, list Talents and illustrate relative proficiency. The magic academies rank their students, so magicians have a fair idea of their capabilities. Keep in mind that the City forcibly awakens all magic potential: no one in the Spelheim capital can remain latent.

Write a small fragment according to this scenario:

While on a midnight stroll through a dark alley, or a forest road, your character encounters a faint silhouette. The person approaches at a relaxed pace, holding an object that might be a sword, or a walking cane, or even a tree branch. You are not sure you have been seen, but the chances are fair.

Illustrate suspicions and the appropriate action. No word minimum. This does not have to be elaborate. Hide behind a tree and you?re done. Charge the silhouette with your sword and you?re done. This is not canon, i.e. do not start your first post running from an alley.

CASSELBERRY, Fla. (AP) ? A gunman opened fire at a central Florida beauty salon Thursday, killing three women and wounding the manager, who had asked for a restraining order against him, police said. After the rampage, the gunman went to a friend's house and killed himself.

Authorities said the shooting was part of a domestic dispute, but did not elaborate. The gunman, identified by police as Bradford Baumet, was served with a domestic violence injunction Oct. 9 and scheduled to be in court Thursday for a hearing with the salon's manager, Marcia Santiago. Their relationship was not immediately clear.

About two hours before the hearing, Baumet, 36, entered Las Dominicanas M & M Salon in Casselberry and started shooting, police spokeswoman Sara Brady said. Two women hid inside a bathroom and one ran outside through a back door.

Santiago, 44, was in serious condition at a hospital. She was shot five times, according to her ex-husband, William Ayala, who spoke to her sister. Ayala said he had a daughter with Santiago and the girl lived with him.

"I heard he was violent and had a criminal record," he told The Associated Press.

Records in Florida and Rhode Island show Baumet has been previously arrested for domestic assault, felony assault, stalking, burglary and drug possession.

Police identified two other victims as 52-year-old Gladys Cabrera, a customer and 29-year-old Noelia Gonzalez-Brito, a salon employee. Authorities did not immediately identify the fourth woman who died.

Shortly after the shooting, about two dozen mourners gathered near the salon, located in a strip mall. Police taped off the parking lot and officers stood guard outside the business. Yellow paper covered up some of the glass windows. A Dominican Republic flag hung in the storefront along with a neon sign that read: Hair Cut. Color. Perm.

Calls to the salon's owner also went unanswered. A video posted on the salon's website shows a woman explaining in Spanish the services offered at the salon for men and women.

Casselberry is about 15 miles northeast of Orlando.

A witness to the salon shooting told the Orlando Sentinel (http://thesent.nl/WsxRBn) he heard gunshots before seeing the gunman flee.

"We saw the guy with the gun in his hand ... coming this way ... on foot with the gun in his hand," said Juan Diaz, who was at a nearby store at the time of the shooting. He said he went into the salon once the gunman left and saw "a bunch of dead bodies."

When Baumet went to his friends' house, he did not threaten them, but said "he had some problems, problems he could not remedy," Seminole County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Heather Smith said.

Baumet was jailed in Orange County on Oct. 14 after an arrest for driving on a suspended license. He was released the following day after posting $250 bond and sentenced to time-served.

A phone number listed for Baumet was disconnected.

A year ago in Orange County in Southern California, an angry ex-husband donned a bulletproof vest before killing his ex-wife and six of her fellow stylists and patrons at a hair salon, police said. Scott Dekraai is also accused of killing a man in the parking lot. He is awaiting trial on murder charges.

Unemployment rates fall in 7 US swing states

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Unemployment rates fell or held steady last month in nine key swing states at the center of this year's presidential election.

Rates dropped in Ohio, Florida, Wisconsin, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada and North Carolina. They were unchanged in New Hampshire and Virginia.

The declines could help President Barack Obama at a critical time. With just 18 days until Election Day, polls show GOP challenger Mitt Romney gaining momentum with voters.

Overall, the Labor Department says rates fell in 41 states last month, rose in six and were unchanged in three. The national unemployment rate dropped in September to 7.8 percent, the lowest level since Obama's first month in office.

Still, many key states are facing high unemployment. The rate was 11.8 percent in Nevada and 9.6 percent in North Carolina.

Why I Burned My Social Security Card - Investment U

Today, October 19, I reached the ?retirement? milestone of 65 years of age. Fortunately, my health is good and I still play basketball, golf and other sports, and feel young as ever. I have no plans of retiring. I hope to write Forecasts & Strategies for at least another 20 years!

As I approach my sunset years, as they call it, I?d like to think that my investment strategy has improved with age. At least that?s what the Hulbert Financial Digest seems to indicate ? My newsletter, Forecasts & Strategies, has beaten the market six out of the last seven years. And we are beating the market this year.

How? By focusing primarily on income-producing investments. Studies have shown that dividend-paying stocks beat the market with less risk. The most important lesson of investing is that Wall Street exaggerates everything. (See my book Investing in One Lesson.) You can?t eliminate risk in the stock market, but you can reduce it by emphasizing dividend-paying stocks.

The Coming Bankruptcy of Social Security

Sixty five is the age when Americans traditionally retire from work and sign up for Social Security and Medicare.

As an ardent supporter of self-reliance and limited government, I have felt for a long time reluctant to accept Social Security payments when our government is so deeply in debt. Back in the early 1980s, I burned my Social Security card at the New Orleans Investment Conference as a protest against a bad retirement system.

There are a lot of problems with Social Security. It?s a poorly developed, defined pension plan that discriminates against working wives and low-income workers. It imposed high taxes (15% payroll tax) on the middle class and the working class. It keeps them from saving. And the Social Security Trust Fund is a poor way to invest the money (in Treasury securities rather than the stock market).

Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have the guts to say that Social Security and Medicare are bankrupt, with trillions of dollars in unfunded liabilities. Social Security alone faces an unfunded liability of $8.6 trillion. But so far no president has been willing to really address the massive problems these two government programs face in the near future (next 20 to 30 years).

Fundamental changes need to be made. Like private companies, the government needs to convert Social Security into a defined contribution plan like a 401(k). Businesses have done it, but government is afraid to make the change.

Otherwise, runaway inflation is the only way out. I well remember Senator William Proxmire saying in the late 1970s, that young people who reach Social Security age will be paid. ?We have the power to provide that money. And we are going to do it. It may not be worth anything when the recipient gets it, but he is going to get his benefits paid.?

I was one of those young people he was talking to. And now that I?ve reached 65, I can sign up for Social Security and get around $1,800 a month.

Taking the Social Security Pledge

Fortunately, I?ve been lucky and don?t need to take Social Security to live on. I?ve worked hard, saved, and invested to build up my net worth. I?ve paid off my home mortgage, and I have both a company pension program and an individual retirement account. Like many wise Americans, I?ve followed the golden principles of ?industry, thrift and prudence? advocated by Benjamin Franklin in The Way to Wealth.

I?ve asked a variety of friends and colleagues what they do with their monthly Social Security check. Many depend on Social Security for their livelihood. Others say they don?t do anything special with the money. It?s deposited directly into their bank accounts, and they spend it as they do any other income.

This started me to thinking: Can Social Security payments be used for a good cause?

In the early 1970s, my uncle W. Cleon Skousen, a political conservative, told me that when he turned 65, he would refuse Social Security payments because he didn?t believe in a government-imposed pension system. But in 1978, when he turned 65, he couldn?t resist the extra monthly income of $650. After all, he had earned it during his working years. It had been deducted from his paycheck and set aside for him (theoretically, at least) in the Social Security Trust Fund. It was his. So he went down to the Social Security Office in Salt Lake City and signed up.

But he didn?t just spend the money for daily living expenses. He decided to sign the monthly Treasury check over to his favorite cause, his National Center for Constitutional Studies. His personal mission was to teach Americans about the Constitution and how to preserve it. Through NCCS, he traveled the country giving Constitutional seminars to patriotic Americans.

I think he made the right decision. I?m sure his foundation made better use of the money than the federal government would have by wasting it on some boondoggle.

Put Your Social Security Check to Good Use

Following in my uncle?s footsteps, I?ve decided to sign up for Social Security. Since I don?t need the money to live on, I?ve decided to invest my monthly government check into a variety of good causes. Based on my past earnings, I should receive a check of around $1,800 a month, automatically transferred into my bank account.

Too often wealthy retirees don?t know what to do with Social Security. They sign up and deposit it into their bank accounts and don?t know what to do with the money.

I suggest they take the Social Security Pledge. If you are wealthy enough, use part or all of your Social Security proceeds to invest in a favorite cause or two. Invest 10% or 100% of your monthly Social Security check in your favorite charity, foundation, church, or synagogue, or other good cause.

To take the pledge, go to www.socialsecuritypledge.org. I?ve set up this website so you can take the pledge and identify your favorite causes with links. I hope you will do so.

Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have the Giving Pledge, where billionaires sign up and pledge to give away the majority of their fortune to charity. But the Social Security Pledge is better, because you can do it while you?re alive and it affects more people.

You don?t have to limit yourself to giving to non-profit organizations that are tax deductible. You can give your Social Security check to any organization, public or private, or to individuals. You can donate it to your favorite political party. You can even give the funds to a student scholarship ? for your grandchildren, for example. Or somebody who has a medical need.

Investing in Free Enterprise

Another possibility is to invest your government check in free enterprise. Buy shares in individual stocks or mutual funds through a brokerage account. The pay gap between men and women?the difference in pay for the same jobs?was front and center in this week's presidential debate. The exchange over equal pay led to the second debate's most memorable quip about "binders full of women." That statement became an instant Internet meme.

Slate, meanwhile, has published an interactive map showing how each state and county does with wage inequality. In New England, Suffolk County (Booston and a few surrounding cities)?does best. On average, women here are paid 83 cents for every dollar a man earns for the same job.

Worst in New England? Coastal New Hampshire's Rockingham County, where women average 59 cents for every dollar a man in a similar role would earn.
