Golden Keyes Parsons1 200x300 Author Interview: Golden Keyes ParsonsGolden Keyes Parsons is a popular retreat and conference speaker and author of historical novels. Her book, ?In The Shadow Of The Sun King,? (Thomas Nelson Publishing), first in a three-book series based on her family genealogy, released Fall 2008, and was named a finalist in the ACFW?s Book of the Year Debut Author category. Her second book, ?Prisoner Of Versailles,? was released September 2009 and was named a finalist in RWA?s prestigious Daphne contest and this year is a finalist for the AWSA Golden Scroll Novel of the Year. The concluding book in the series, ?Where Hearts Are Free? released September 2010 and is a Women of Faith Book Club selection. Her fourth novel, ?His Steadfast Love,? a Civil War novel set in Texas, releases November 2011.

Golden lives in Waco, TX, with her husband, Blaine. When she isn?t writing or speaking, she is busy with their three grown daughters, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren or attending sporting and alumni events at Baylor University.

Hello, and thanks for?taking time to read my interview.?My name is Golden Keyes Parsons, and I have the incredible privilege?of being?able?to write?historical fiction for Thomas Nelson Publishing.

The first question that usually comes my way is about my name. Yes, it is my real name. My maiden name was Keyes, and my father, who was a newspaper man and writer himself, thought it would be fun to name me Golden Keyes. I don?t have a middle name. My parents always intended for me to use ?Keyes? as my middle name when I married, but I never used it until I started writing professionally.

Then the second question is: How did you start writing? As I mentioned above, my dad was a newspaper man, as was his father and all of his brothers. I grew up around books and manuscripts and was writing for the hometown newspaper at a young age. However, I never even thought about trying to get a book published until I started speaking professionally in 1996. I started out in non-fiction, and came close to obtaining a contract with a couple of projects, but just never could land a contract. In the meantime, I came across a family genealogy on my mother?s side who were French Huguenots (Protestants) who fled the persecution of the Catholic government in France in the early 18th century.

?Then the Lord chastened me one day. How did Jesus teach truth to the people of his day? By telling stories! The parables! Oh, my, what a turn-around in my thinking. I learned that a non-Christian is not likely to pick up a Christian inspirational non-fiction, but she might pick up a novel. And I must say, in my opinion, fiction is much more difficult to write.

So I set out to tell the story of my Huguenot ancestors.?That effort?turned into the Darkness To Light Series: In The Shadow Of The Sun King, A Prisoner Of Versailles, and Where Hearts Are Free. The protagonist, Madeleine Clavell, is based loosely on my ancestor.

I love to write about courageous, strong women of faith who face real obstacles and temptations. My heroines are not perfect. They face real issues, and they fail sometimes. They may go through periods of time when they don?t trust God or they are offended by God.?But they ultimately?find that even when they don?t understand his ways that God?does not forsake his children. They come through the hurt and trauma perhaps wounded and limping, but stronger for it. I hope my readers are strengthened by reading about my character?s journeys.

My next book, His Steadfast Love, a Civil War novel set in Texas, relates the struggle of a Southern girl whose brother fights for the Confederacy and her sweetheart is a Union officer. She is torn. The book is due for release November 1. Incidentally, this is the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War, so we are hoping that will generate some interest in the book.

My writing schedule varies with what stage my book is in. If I?m in the middle of completing a manuscript, I write in the mornings and work on marketing in the afternoons. So much research goes into the writing of an historical novel that some days are spent entirely in research.

Thanks for spending time with me today. I love to hear from my readers.?I can be reached through my web sitewww.goldenkeyesparsons.com.

Thanks for the interview, Janalyn. It?s been fun!
