Kroger customers can help fight breast cancer on behalf of a special person during Kroger?s autumn breast cancer campaign, which has already begun and will go through the end of October.

Customers may purchase a pink ribbon for $1 at any Kroger register and all proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. Customers also can help by making a coin box donation to benefit breast cancer awareness and research.

You can donate at the West Bloomfield Krogers on Orchard Lake Road and Haggerty Road.

All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. Located in Detroit, the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is one of 41 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States.

?Every family in America is touched by breast cancer?whether individuals have relatives or friends afflicted with this life-threatening disease or suffer from the disease themselves,? said Rick Going, president of The Kroger Co. of Michigan, in a statement. ?By purchasing a pink ribbon and donating to coin boxes, customers are raising funds for vital research and supporting organizations dedicated to saving lives.?

FTC Wades Deeper Into Online Child Privacy Thicket

The Federal Trade Commission is working on an update of the rules governing the online collection of personal information, which have remained pretty much the same since 1998. The changes to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, however, are likely to do as much to invade children's privacy as to protect it. The proposed changes have been debated since 2009.

Ang Lee's 3D 'Life of Pi' opens NY film festival

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Once considered impossible to make, the big-screen 3D adaptation of the bestselling novel "Life of Pi" opened the 50th New York Film Festival on Friday, marking another advance in digital filmmaking.

The movie's director, Ang Lee, hit the red carpet at the big-budget movie's world premiere, with the black-tie audience getting the first glimpse of the spiritual story of a boy stranded on a boat with a tiger. It kicked off the screenings of more than 160 films over 17 days at the New York festival.

One of the world's most respected movie showcases, the festival typically emphasizes the art of cinema by focusing on the best films from the year's European festivals rather than Hollywood-style premieres. But the event is still seen as an important step in gathering buzz as Hollywood's awards season gets going.

More splashy world premieres than usual are on this year's schedule, including "Sopranos" maker David Chase's film feature debut, "Not Fade Away" and Robert Zemeckis' first live-action film "Flight," starring Denzel Washington, which will close the festival.

"Life of Pi" uses computer-generated imagery to bring a cinematic feel to the tale of a Hindu boy who survives a shipwreck and gets stranded on a lifeboat for 227 days with a spotted hyena, an injured zebra, an orangutan and a Bengal tiger called Richard Parker.

It is director Lee's riskiest film to date, even after 2005's "Brokeback Mountain," for which he won the best director Oscar. That film generated controversy for breaking barriers about gay portrayals on screen.

The 57-year-old Taiwanese born-director told the premiere on Friday night the film took four years to make and he joked about learning the hard way the difficulties of making a film in 3D predominantly set in the middle of the ocean portraying a host of zoo animals.

"'Life of Pi' was such an incredible story I just couldn't help myself, I had to tell this story," he said to audience applause. "This was an incredible journey for me."

DIRECTOR FOUND NOVEL 'MIND-BOGGLING'

With a budget of nearly $100 million, the film that opens in November in the United States is considered one of the riskier holiday season films.

Early reviews posted on Friday were mixed. The Hollywood reporter called it "exceptionally beautiful" and appealing to diverse audiences. Variety called it visually stunning but lacking in dramatic tension and grit.

Lee told reporters earlier on Friday that he read the novel soon after its release in 2001, and found it "mind-boggling." But he added, "I remember thinking to myself, nobody in their right mind" would transfer it to film due to the technical difficulties of filming the story.

Spurred on by its spiritual message, Lee agreed to make the movie and saw 3D as the only way to realize it, even before "Avatar" in 2009 broke through as a box-office bonanza for 3D movies.

"Life of Pi" stars novice Indian actor Suraj Sharma, who was plucked from more than 3,000 hopefuls. The book's author, Canadian writer Yann Martel, said he never imagined the film adaptation. "It was cinematic in my mind but I never thought I would actually see it on the screen, that it would be too complicated to do," he said.

Other films looking to gain favor with critics and audiences coming off showings at earlier festivals include Michael Haneke's "Amour," Romanian director Cristian Mungiu's "Beyond the Hills," Noah Baumbach's black-and-white ode to New York, "Frances Ha," starring Greta Gerwig, and Chile director Pablo Larrain's "No."

home Inspection vs. Appraisal | A-Pro Home Inspection Olympia

posted by admin @ 1:30 PM

Friday, September 28, 2012

Sometimes buyers ignore the need for a home inspection because they don?t understand the purpose. Inspectors are confused with appraisers. The latter confirms the home?s market value to the lender but it offers consumers no protection in terms of the overall condition of the home.

Buyers shouldn?t let anyone convince them that they don?t need an inspection. Even people moving into new construction or foreclosure home should consider hiring a professional home inspector.

If an inspector identifies problems in either a new or an existing home, the seller could adjust the price or terms in the contract to the buyer?s benefit.

It doesn?t pay to try to save a couple bucks by having a friend with building experience walk through the home. Experienced inspectors know what to look for and how to classify the problems he or she sees. In some states, only licensed professionals can conduct inspections.

Barbra Streisand Talks Heart Disease On Katie! | FitPerez.com

As if we could ever reach a limit in loving Barbra Streisand!

Babs went on Katie Couric's show Katie to talk about a bunch of stuff, but the most important things she had to say were inarguably about the dangers of heart disease for women.

Did you know that heart disease kills more women than all cancers combined?

That's staggering, and it's frustrating to hear that most research is done on men. Well, not if Babs has anything to say about it ? she recently raised and donated millions of dollars for a new research center at Cedars-Sinai in El Lay!

So fab!

Check out the interview (above) to hear why this is important, and in the second video learn some tips on how to help yourself avoid such a terrible disease!

Is '47 percent' comment sinking Mitt Romney's polls?

Gaffes don't typically have much effect, but Mitt Romney's secretly recorded remarks may have staying power. His polls started falling soon after his words went public ? and continue to drop.

By Peter Grier,?Staff Writer / September 27, 2012

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney campaigns at American Legion Post 176 in Springfield, Va., on Thursday.

It?s been 10 days since Mitt Romney?s now-famous ?47 percent? comments became public. Since then countless news stories have chewed over Mr. Romney?s secretly recorded assertion that 47 percent of US voters see themselves as ?victims? and are too dependent on government to vote Republican. Are Romney?s words ? plus the subsequent media focus ? now dragging down his campaign?

Frankly, we?ve been skeptical the ?47 percent? stuff would have a measurable effect on the polls. Individual events seldom do, no matter what the cable news chattering clique says. When asked directly, many voters may disapprove of such sentiments, but would that really make them more or less likely to vote Romney? Isn?t it more probable it would just reinforce what they already felt, one way or another?

Yeah, well, we?re reconsidering that now, for two reasons. The first is that Romney?s polls worsened fairly quickly after the comments came out. Take Gallup?s daily tracking poll, which has been a bit more pro-Romney than other national surveys. It?s a seven-day, rolling average of numbers. On Sept. 22, the day its sample consisted of people all contacted after Romney?s words became public, it went from a 46 to 46 percent tied race to a 2 point Obama advantage. Since then it has continued to widen. Yesterday Obama was up by 6, 50 to 44 percent.

As Josh Marshall, the generally liberal editor of TalkingPointsMemo, notes: That doesn?t really prove anything. ?But the correlation is extremely tight.?

Looking at national poll averages, plus polls in the key states of Ohio and Florida, George Washington University associate professor of political science John Sides sees a 1 percent swing to Obama from the day before the ?47 percent? became public to Sept. 23.

?How confident am I that this 1% shift is due to 47%?? tweeted Mr. Sides, who previously has been skeptical of the comment?s immediate political effects. ?Maybe 30%.?

But whatever the numbers say, it?s clear that the campaigns think the ?47 percent? stuff could be electoral kryptonite. That?s our second reason. Look at what both campaign teams are actually doing: putting up ads that either highlight (Obama) or explain away (Romney) those fundraiser words.

Friday, for instance, the Obama campaign has released a new 30-second spot it claims will run in swing states. It contains nothing but Romney?s own words. While photos of US workers fade in and out, Romney talks about the 47 percent feeling entitled to ?health care, to food, to housing, to you name it."

The Romney campaign, for its part, has released a one-minute, "Too Many Americans? spot that highlights the ex-Massachusetts governor?s assertion of compassion.

?More Americans are living in poverty than when President Obama took office, and 15 million more are on food stamps,? says Romney, looking straight into the camera. ?President Obama and I both care about poor and middle class families. The difference is my policies will make things better for them.... We should measure compassion by how many people can get off welfare and get a good-paying job.?

Of course, there are only a few weeks now until the election. At this point, the Romney campaign probably did not think it would still have to devote time and money to ?Message: I care? ads, to paraphrase President George H. W. Bush.

Battle Between Engagement & Automation in Human Resources ...

?

The Future of Human Resources Technologies

There is a war happening at your offices every single day. ?Not a physical war in a sense but one that is lurking behind the scenes. ?As a human resources professional, recruiter, or corporate leader you are conflicted. ?On one hand, you believe that messages need to be delivered efficiently, effectively, and provide the organization with a competitive advantage. While on the other, hand you fight with transparency, authenticity, and separating your work life and personal life. ?Sometime it is just too much. ?The technologies in human resources are just too much.

Understanding the Benefits & Perils of Workplace Automation

For many corporate professionals who happen to be voluntarily or involuntarily thrown into the job market, they see these automated interactions and the business engagement struggle every day. ?On one hand, we understand the need for pre-employment testing and workplace automation. ? While on the other, we want nothing more than to talk to a real human being unscripted, real, and human. ?Not just a LinkedIn InMail from a recruiter but a real, live, and personalized conversation. ?Just something, a nugget of insights, engagement, and compassion that isn?t a canned or planned message. ?Those canned messages are just fodder for the disengaged employees.

Most Americans realize that Presidential candidates do not write their own speeches. ?That is in fact what speech writers are for, and that most CEO?s don?t read their own email. ?The communications are analyzed, prepared, and a strategy is in play. ?Corporate communication memos are drafted by PR and then prepared and sent by the corporate admin. ?Business leaders believe that we must work efficiently and strategically. ?Not that these messages don?t matter, we just don?t have the time. ?So we automate the process or reassign said duties to someone else pretending it?s our thoughts and our voice.

I think we are struggling between automation using hiring?algorithms, applicant tracking sytsems and the personal and human touch that we desire as consumers, employees, and candidates. ?It?s the battle between workplace automation and engagement. ?And it is happening squarely in HR technology. ?These systems, softwares, and programs are designed to be efficient to drive productivity and putting our corporate minds at ease. ?Except that you can?t fake engagement. ?Sooner or later your audience gets wise and demands authenticity and individualism in the marketplace.

Employee Involvement Not Just Employee Engagement

I believe we?re at a cross roads in this industry. ?Technologies in human resources and human capital management are and will remain an important part of our jobs forever. ?Except that in my mind engagement is what drives innovation, excitement, and passion. ?Companies that get this right are going to have a huge advantage recruiting, training, retaining, and selling to employees, consumers, and candidates. ?It?s about employee involvement not just employee engagement. ?That is no longer enough.

Certainly, mobile will continue to be important as our audiences are always on the go. ?Companies will need to move to mobile websites and focus on providing great information and content to continue to build relationshiops with their employees and job seekers. ?An HR technology company that develops a tool and software to accomplish this task will be celebrated and rewarded whether it?s recruiting-focused or employee-focused. ?Internal communication will continue to be important as companies look to develop internal social networks in addition to going where their employees and families are. Different channels work for different individuals but companies need to remember that the majority of the workforce is now millenials not boomers who are most of the decision makers. ?Companies who adapt and realize this will be ahead of the game in some many ways.

Creating a conversation that is meaningful and gives the job seekers or employee the insights, information, and help that they want while also balancing the ?sell me? side of employment brand. ?Your social network is more than a jobs feed or blog content stream. ?A simple about page or white paper download is not enough. ?Its a conversation so engage your audience whoever they are, and do it in a meaninginful way. ?Focus on your disengaged workforce and employees. ?Find the balance between engagement and workplace automation. ?That?s the future in the human resources, recruiter, and human capital industries.

Google: Maps not waiting in wings for iPhone 5

14 hrs.

Google has made no move to provide Google Maps for the iPhone 5 after Apple?dropped the application in favor of a home-grown but controversial alternative, Google's Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said.

Apple launched its own mapping service earlier this month when it began providing the highly anticipated update to its mobile software platform iOS 6 and started selling the iPhone 5.

But users have complained that Apple's new map service, based on Dutch navigation equipment and digital map maker TomTom's data, contains glaring geographical errors and lacks features that made Google Maps so popular.

"We think it would have been better if they had kept ours. But what do I know?" Schmidt told a small group of reporters in Tokyo. "What were we going to do, force them not to change their mind? It's their call."

Schmidt said Google and Apple were in constant communication "at all kinds of levels." But he said any decision on whether Google Maps would be accepted as an application in the Apple App Store would have to be made by Apple.

"We have not done anything yet," he said.

Google and Apple were close partners with the original iPhone in 2007 and its inclusion of YouTube and Google Maps. But the ties between the two have been strained by the rise of Google's Android mobile operating system, now the world's leading platform for smartphones.

Schmidt said he hoped Google would remain Apple's search partner on the iPhone but said that question was up to Apple.

"I'm not doing any predictions. We want them to be our partner. We welcome that. I'm not going to speculate at all what they're going to do. They can answer that question as they see fit," he said.

Google provides Android free of charge and allows developers to add applications on an open basis, betting that by cultivating a bigger pool of users ??now at over 500 million globally ??it can make more money by providing search functions and selling advertising.

"Apple is the exception, and the Android system is the common model, which is why our market share is so much higher," Schmidt said, adding that success was often ignored by the media, which he said was "obsessed with Apple's marketing events and Apple's branding."

"That's great for Apple but the numbers are on our side," he said.

At one point, Schmidt, who was in Japan to announce the launch of Google's Nexus tablet here, used the device to show off a new function of Google Maps.

The feature allows users to shift their view of an area by moving the device in the air without touching the screen, similar to the effect of looking around.

"Take that Apple," he said, adding quickly, "That was a joke by the way."

Scoot aims to be Zipcar of electric scooters, launches in SF

DNP Scoot aims to be Zipcar of electric scooters, launches in SF

Aiming to be the Zipcar of electric scooters, Scoot Networks has officially launched in San Francisco after months of beta testing. Ideal for areas with problematic parking, the Chinese-made scooters are 100 percent electric with a 20Ah SLA battery each, and there's even a dock built into the dash to charge most Android or iPhone models. With a screaming top speed of 30 miles per hour, they're obviously meant for short trips and not for the highway. It costs $10 to sign up, $5 per month, then $5 per hour. You can also get a $10 per day deal or a $19 per month option that includes three workdays or overnights. Even though you don't need a motorcycle license to rent one, the company does offer tutorials to get newbies comfortable with the vehicles. If you do have a license, you can opt for the $185 a month plan that lets you get your own personal scooter. A potential issue is that the battery on the electric scooter only lasts around 20 to 30 miles, but San Francisco might have enough EV-friendly parking spots to make that less of a problem. You can watch the company's promo video after the break.

Mailbag: Save some Cy Young votes for Braves' Kimbrel

Reliever having kind of rare season that merits award consideration

Through Monday, Braves closer Craig Kimbrel had allowed only 25 hits and struck out 106 batters in 58 2/3 innings.

Baseball Expert Tony DeMarco has been covering the big leagues since 1987, and been casting Hall of Fame ballots for the last 15 years. He answers questions weekly here:

Q: Given his lights-out ninth-inning performances, how realistic is it to say that Craig Kimbrel is a serious Cy Young Award contender?
? Lee Ayres, Atlanta

A: It's very realistic to think that Kimbrel's name will be included on most of the 32 BBWAA ballots ? which incidentally, now include the top five finishers, rather than the long-standing three. But winning the award figures to be a difficult proposition for him.

Since I happen to have an NL Cy Young Award vote this season, I can't go into any detail at this point on how I will fill out my ballot. But I'll present the questions that voters will have to debate in deciding where to put Kimbrel among a list of standout candidates that includes R.A. Dickey, Gio Gonzalez, Clayton Kershaw, Johnny Cueto, Kyle Lohse, Matt Cain, Aroldis Chapman and possibly a few other potential vote-getters.

First of all, relievers just don't win the award very often. Eric Gagne was the last to do it in 2003, and Dennis Eckersley's MVP/Cy Young season was 20 years ago. It's simple ? no matter how dominant a reliever might be, it's hard to have more impact in 60-or-so innings as a starting pitcher does in 200-plus.

But there are exceptions to every rule, and Kimbrel's dominance certainly has been historical and remarkable (as has Chapman's). How about some of these Kimbrel numbers through Monday?:

  • 25 hits allowed in 58.2 innings and 214 batters faced. His .126 opponents batting average is the lowest qualifying average since 1900.
  • 1.08 ERA
  • With only 14 walks allowed, his WHIP is 0.67 ? the lowest by an NL reliever since 1900.
  • 106 strikeouts, or 16.4 per nine innings ? the best single-season ratio on record.
  • 39 saves in 42 opportunities for a league-best 92.8 percentage.

But the problem is going to be that innings total of only 58.2. Chapman has thrown 10 more despite being shut down for awhile in mid-September, and actually has 13 more strikeouts than Kimbrel.

And are Kimbrel's historically microscopic numbers better in the grand scheme of things than ? just to pick two leading candidates:

  • Dickey with a very good shot at a pitching Triple Crown, going 19-6 (with two remaining starts) for a sub-.500 team, pitching seven innings and allowing one or fewer runs in 15 starts, tossing back-to-back one-hitters, and being in the top three in virtually every major statistical category?
  • Gonzalez winning 20 games (granted with the league's best run support and no blown saves behind him), leading the NL in opponents' batting average and OPS, and doing all of it for a first-place team?

These are tough calls voters will have to make, and it just may come down to this last week of the regular season for many of them to decide.

Q: Do you think that being pushed by the Orioles will help the Yankees come playoff time? Or does it matter at all?
? Jennifer Chilm, Los Angeles

A: This question arises every late-September for first-place teams, and here's how I see it: I do think it's better for division leaders to be somewhat challenged, and be forced to play at a high level down the stretch. That makes it easier to keep their edge once the playoffs begin ? as opposed to clinching too early and losing intensity.

In almost every postseason, we see a favorite who clinched early and coasted into the playoffs, only to get upset. And most often, it's by a team that had to fight its way into the playoffs, and in effect, had been playing playoff games for the last couple of weeks. Last year's Cardinals are the latest in a long line of teams to fit the latter bill.

But as the first-place team, you don't want to be pushed for too long, or challenged so late that you don't clinch until the last day or two of the regular season. That might not allow you to set your rotation, or rest a regular or two who could use a couple of days off.

So the ideal scenario to me is be pushed a bit, but clinch the division title with a minimum of three games left in the regular season. In the new playoff format, with off days and the wild-card play-in game, that would allow almost a week to adjust and set things just right heading into the LDS round.

In the Yankees' case, the AL race is a bit tighter than they'd like. In fact, it's been so tight for so long that their 1.5-game edge over the Orioles through Monday seems big, doesn't it? I do think they will outlast the Orioles and win the AL East, setting up a first-round series against either the White Sox or Tigers.

And at that point, then it will become more a question of match-ups with either of those two teams, as well as how healthy and effective the Yankees' starting pitchers will be, not to mention Mark Teixeira.

Q: The Padres signed Carlos Quentin and Huston Street to extensions this year, but have not signed Chase Headley, who in my opinion is their best player. Why is that? What do you think will happen in the off-season with him?
? Robert Pyper, Phoenix

A: Oh, there's no doubt about it, Headley is the Padres' best player. Which makes their handling of his situation very interesting and important, to say the least.

In his breakout season, Headley, 28, is making $3.475 million ? easily one of the game's best bargains among arbitration-eligible players. His salary for 2013 will more than double in arbitration, and a long-term deal certainly has become the likeliest option with his monster second half (.300, 21 HR, 66 RBI, .372 OBP, .576 slugging through Monday).

While Headley's second half significantly has upped his value, if I were the Padres, I'd lock him up in a multi-year deal that will take away a year or two of free agency. He doesn't complain about the home ballpark, has proven that you can put up numbers despite its pitcher-friendly conditions, and is a solid defender and team leader.

And as you mention, the team's new ownership already has handed out extensions, so it appears as if there's room to expand the payroll ? certainly in the case of a cornerstone-type player such as Headley, rather than a chronic injury risk such as Quentin.

But the Padres were listening to offers for Headley around the trade deadline, and could do again this winter. And in fact, they owe it to themselves to at least see if there's an offer out there similar to the great package (Yonder Alonso, Yasmani Grandal, Edinson Volquez, Brad Boxberger) they received from the Reds last off-season for Matt Latos. If so, they may decide to go that route.

But absent that, Headley likely will get a long-term deal to stay in San Diego.

(AP) ? Americans are more confident in the economy than they have been in seven months, an encouraging sign for President Barack Obama with six weeks left in the presidential race.

A new survey of consumer confidence rose Tuesday to its highest level since February on expectations that hiring will soon pick up. And a separate report showed home values rising steadily, signaling sustained improvement in housing.

"This is like an opinion poll on the economy without the political parties attached," said John Ryding, chief economist at RDQ Economics, a consulting firm. The confidence survey "says people are feeling better. If so, they are less likely to vote for change."

The Conference Board's index of consumer confidence shot up in September. The jump surprised many economists because the most recent hiring and retail sales figures have been sluggish.

The increased confidence could help explain recent polls that show Obama with a widening lead over Mitt Romney in some battleground states.

The consumer confidence index is closely watched because consumer spending drives nearly 70 percent of economic activity. The index jumped from 61.3 for August to 70.3 for September. It remains well below 90, the level that is thought to signify a healthy economy.

Among those feeling more optimistic about the economy is Darlene Johnson of Silver Spring, Md., who works for the National Institutes of Health. The value of Johnson's 401(k) account has risen. Home sales in her neighborhood have ticked up, too, and are commanding higher prices.

"I feel like things are stabilizing," she said. "I don't feel as uneasy as I did a few months ago."

But Johnson, who voted for Obama in 2008, remains undecided on which candidate to back. And she's still a bit nervous about the future.

"It will depend on how my pockets are looking," she says. "Everyday circumstances will drive my decision on how I am going to vote."

Economists point to some key reasons why consumers have grown more confident.

Stocks are up: The Standard & Poor's 500 stock index has surged nearly 15 percent this year. Gas prices have leveled off after rising for several months. And the broad increase in home prices is likely giving would-be buyers more confidence. When prices rise, buyers don't worry so much that a home might lose value after they bought it.

National home prices rose 1.2 percent in July compared with a year ago, according to the Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller index released Tuesday. That was the second straight month in which year-over-year home prices have increased.

Some economists question whether the higher level of confidence is sustainable. They've seen the index spike briefly before since the Great Recession ended more than three years ago. Some say confidence could be affected by negative campaign ads that focus on the economy.

But others note that even a weak economy doesn't feel so bad to many consumers once it begins to make steady improvement.

"The economy is perceived in relative rather than absolute terms," noted St. Louis University political scientist and pollster Ken Warren.

Mark Vitner, a senior economist at Wells Fargo, suggests that former President Bill Clinton might have helped boost confidence with his rousing speech on Obama's behalf at the Democratic National Convention in early September. The Conference Board's consumer confidence survey was conducted Sept. 1-13.

Clinton "rekindled memories of better economic times" and assured voters that the U.S. economy was on the right track, Vitner said.

The consumer confidence survey polled 500 people. The part of the survey that gauges consumers' confidence in the economy now and the part that gauges their outlook for the next six months both rose. Consumers were much more optimistic about the short-term outlook for business conditions, employment and their financial situation.

The rising home prices could also help Obama's prospects. Prices are rising in many large cities in swing states such as Florida, Colorado, Michigan and North Carolina. Prices have risen 3.6 percent in Tampa, Fla., in the past year, for example. And they're up 5.4 percent in Denver, 6.2 percent in Detroit and 2.2 percent in Charlotte, N.C.

A Washington Post poll out Tuesday showed Obama leading Romney among likely voters in Ohio, 52 to 44 percent. The president also had a slight edge in Florida, 51 to 47 percent among those most likely to vote.

Obama is also gaining the upper hand on which candidate is better able to handle the economy. Registered voters in Ohio preferred Obama on the economy by 50 percent to 43 percent, and in Florida by 49 percent to 45 percent.

Europe must take "deep breath" and enact reforms: Merkel

BERLIN (Reuters) - Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday that Europe could only hope to come out of its crisis stronger and compete in a globalised world if its members pressed ahead with painful reforms and moved to more responsible budget policies.

Speaking at a meeting of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), Merkel acknowledged that Germany was "not an island" that could disconnect from economic developments in Europe and the world economy.

But she placed the onus on Berlin's struggling euro zone partners to fix their own economies, rejecting the idea that Germany should relax its own productivity drive in order to help its partners.

"We need to take a deep breath to overcome this crisis," Merkel said. "We must make the efforts that will allow Europe to come out of this crisis stronger than it went in."

"There is a lack of confidence on financial markets that some euro zone states can pay back their debts in the long term," she continued. "The world wonders how competitive euro zone countries are."

The German leader said tough reforms in southern Europe had led to some convergence of unit labor costs across the euro zone, but made clear that there was still work to do.

She also expressed regret that the European Court of Justice had not been given stronger powers to intervene in national budget policies in the euro zone.

"We can't have support without controls. The two go hand in hand," Merkel said.

The German economy has held up well during the crisis, with unemployment holding near post-reunification lows. But there are signs that economic weakness across much of Europe and a slowdown in Chinese growth are beginning to bite.

Business sentiment is at its weakest level since early 2010, data released by the Ifo economic think tank showed on Monday. And some economists believe Germany could fall into a technical recession in the second half of this year.

"NOT AN ISLAND"

"We are feeling that Germany is not an island. We are an export nation. Forty percent of our exports go to the euro zone, 60 percent to the European Union. We can't disconnect from European and global economic developments," Merkel said.

Merkel held up the fiscal compact for budget discipline and plans to introduce pan-European banking supervision as signs of Europe's progress.

She dismissed the notion that Berlin was slamming on the brakes in the creation of a European banking watchdog. In recent weeks, the German government has made clear that it sees a January deadline for putting this in place as unrealistic.

"We want stronger European banking supervision," she said.

Merkel was due to meet European Central Bank President Mario Draghi on Tuesday afternoon. Later he will give a speech to the same industry conference.

Draghi's plan, unveiled at the start of the month, to buy the bonds of struggling euro countries, combined with a green light from Germany's Constitutional Court for Europe's new rescue fund have been welcomed by markets.

But worries have grown in the past week over Spain's reluctance to seek a bailout that would allow it to profit from the ECB's bond plan. Also weighing on the euro on Tuesday was a report that lawyers at the German Bundesbank were looking into the legality of Draghi's bond scheme.

The Best Guide When It Comes To Having A Home Based Business ...

Most people have thought about the possibilities available to them if they ran a successful home business. Running your own home business allows you flexibility other jobs don?t have. Most people never make it from the dreaming stage to the execution. Follow these tips if you are serious about starting your own business.

A basic website serves most home based businesses, so make sure to spend a little extra on beta testing of the website you design or have created. You should design your site to be browser-friendly on all available formats, such as mobile devices, and try to make your information follow similar formats on all devices. Verifying your website?s accessibility across multiple platforms will ensure that you don?t miss out on any potential customers just because they use a different browser than you do.

TIP! Check into the backgrounds of any potential employees who you want to hire for your home business. Your employees should be experienced in the area of your business, or else your business could fail.

Be sure that you can portray what your business does within a business objective, usually composed within one or two sentences. You should state exactly what your goals are with your business and what it is about. Be sure to explain what makes your company unique and its goals in these sentences.

Pay attention to your own personal health when it comes to your office environment by investing in comfortable and ergonomic equipment. If you have to strain your body in any way, it will be uncomfortable and you may damage your body permanently. Spend a good amount of money on your desk chair if you spend a lot time of sitting in it. You should also invest in ergonomic lighting, mouse, mouse pad, keyboard and anything else that you use on a regular basis. Spending about $200 on this will help a lot.

TIP! Laughter is the best medicine. Laughing will help to you stay calm, feel joy and happiness, and even give your respiratory system a boost.

Including an option for viewers to sign up for your mailing list on your website. Make sure that the mailing list sign up option is on every single page. This way visitors to your site will have a number of chances to enter their contact info.

It can be extremely easy to become engulfed by work when you work from home. This is why you need to set a specific place where you do all of your work. As the day comes to an end, take some time off that?s not spent working, such as time with your family and friends.

Don?t be unrealistic about what you expect to get out of your home business. Is there value and longevity to your product or service? Can you succeed in the business as an honest businessman or businesswoman?

TIP! It is important that you remain employed during the early stages of your new business. New businesses generally take awhile to start generating profits, so stay employed at your current job if possible.

Home business owners are all over the Internet. Check out and research internet communities such as forums or message boards, and include both ones dedicated to your particular niche or outside your area of expertise. You never know where your next big idea may come from, and reading about what other people have experienced can help you out, even if they are in a different field that you are.

Make sure that you always dress for success. When you work out of a home office, you may feel like wearing your jammies. If you want to succeed, put in the effort and dress as you would if you were working at any other job. This makes you feel more professional so you?re as productive as you can be.

As you can see, it will require a little bit of work and dedication to make the jump. If you can manage to pull through and stick to the plan, you will be able to accurately represent your dream in the company?s image and create something that is long-lasting and profitable over the years.

Angels beat White Sox, stay in thick of race

By BETH HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:22 a.m. ET Sept. 23, 2012

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Two straight wins have the Los Angeles Angels still in the thick of the playoff race.

Four consecutive losses haven't derailed the Chicago White Sox's chances either.

Dan Haren earned his first win at home in more than a month, Mark Trumbo capped a four-run first inning with a two-run single and the Angels won 4-2 on Saturday night, trimming Chicago's AL Central lead to a half-game over Detroit.

"We're really positive," Haren said. "It's really a testament to the leaders on the team. Torii (Hunter) has gotten his point across that we're not going to give up until we're eliminated or we win."

Haren (12-11) allowed two runs and six hits in six-plus innings, struck out four and walked one for his first win in Anaheim since beating Tampa Bay on July 27. He had been 0-3 with an 8.77 ERA in three home starts since then.

"Two double plays were big," Haren said, crediting the defense. "For the most part I was keeping the ball down. That's a really good lineup."

Ernesto Frieri pitched the ninth to earn his 20th save in 23 chances after giving up a go-ahead home run in each of his previous two outings.

"Ernie had a couple of rough outings and tonight he found another gear," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.

The Angels have won six of nine and are 2 1/2 games behind Oakland for the second AL wild card. They moved to a season-high 14 games over .500.

"Every guy has a ton of fight left in them and that's really what you want," Trumbo said.

Jose Quintana (6-5) gave up four runs and six hits in five innings, struck out three and walked five for the White Sox, who have scored just 10 runs in their past five games. Chicago struck out 12 times in a 6-2 loss in the series opener Friday.

"This is baseball and guys should be having fun doing it," said White Sox manager Robin Ventura, who was ejected in the fourth.

"There's stress and stuff like that because you want to win games, but we'd rather be doing this than trying to ruin somebody else's postseason chances."

Ventura was tossed by first base umpire Ed Hickox for arguing a balk called on Quintana with the White Sox trailing 4-1. The Angels had runners at the corners with none out when Quintana made an attempted pickoff throw to first baseman Paul Konerko, who was playing way off the bag against the right-handed hitting Mike Trout. Quintana led Konerko to the bag with his throw, and was called for his second balk of the season.

"I don't even know exactly how that went about because it was a designed play, so I was a little surprised that the balk was called," Quintana said through a translator. "I still don't understand it. I would have to look at the video. But it's a play that we have. It's not one that we've tried all the time, but we definitely practiced it in spring training."

Hickox told a pool reporter that Quintana didn't throw directly to first base, but 8 to 10 feet toward second baseman Gordon Beckham.

"Konerko was not breaking until after the pitcher threw the ball and then he was just trying to catch the ball. So in my judgment, there was no attempt to retire the runner," the umpire said. "My view and my judgment is that Konerko just went to try to catch the ball from going down the line."

The Angels failed to score in that inning after loading the bases.

They tied a season high with four runs in the first. Albert Pujols' ground-rule double - the 500th of his career - scored Trout, who walked. Hunter added an RBI single before Trumbo's two-run single with two outs made it 4-0.

Chicago's first run came on Konerko's 24th homer leading off the second. They added another run on pinch-hitter DeWayne Wise's groundout to second off Garrett Richards.

NOTES: Pujols became the 19th player in major league history to record at least 500 doubles and 400 homers in his career. His 45 doubles are the most since he had that many in 2009. ... The White Sox have hit a major league-leading 94 homers since the All-Star break. ... It was Chicago's fourth losing streak of four or more games this season. ... It was Ventura's fourth ejection in his first year as a manager. His last was on Aug. 25 against Seattle. ... Konerko's homer was the first extra-base hit of his career against Haren, who had previously given up six singles to Konerko.

Connelly leads Allen by 2 strokes in Onslow Am golf tournament

September 23, 2012 6:30 AM

It?s an even year, so maybe the 2012 Onslow Amateur Golf Tournament will belong to 33-year-old Eddie Connelly.

After all, Connelly?s other two titles came in even years ? 2006 and 2008 ? and the Jacksonville High School graduate does lead five-time champion Jeff Allen by 2 strokes heading into today?s final round at Bear Trail Golf.

On a muggy day on the links, Connelly shot an even-par 72 Saturday on the Gold Course at Paradise Point Golf Course aboard Camp Lejeune to take a slim lead over Allen and a 3-stroke advantage over Aubrey Evans and Onslow Am first-timer Adam Kish.

While Connelly?s two wins have come in even years, all five of Allen?s titles have come, oddly enough, in odd years.

?Maybe there?s a little vibe,? Connelly said.

It was a tough day for scoring, given not only the humidity but also the wet rough, which penalized players who strayed from the fairway. Only two players broke par, and neither was in the championship or first flight field competing for the overall tournament title.

Chip Summerlin, playing in the senior division, had the best round of the day at 4-under 68 while Tim Manson shot a 69 in the open division second flight.

?I saved 72 shots, how about that?? Connelly said when asked about his round. ?I don?t feel like I?m playing all that well, but I feel like I?m just trying to keep the ball in front of me.?

And get on Camp Lejeune.

Security wouldn?t allow Connelly on base, so he had to call his mother to take him to the course, which he joked about with course officials, along with asking her for $5 ? as he did growing up before hitting the course.

?I really did,? he said, adding that ?$5 used to get me around here all day, 12 hours a day.?

While not feeling he?s at the top of his game, Connelly likes where he is heading into the final round.

?I need all the cushion I can get. I wish it was a 0 after that 2-shot lead, but I feel safe,? he said. ?Jeff?s a great player. I?ve just got to go out there and put it in the fairway and put it on the green and see where we end up after 36 holes.?

Allen wasn?t all that happy with his round after double-bogeying the par-4 477-yard 18th hole after driving it into the rough and then sending his second shot into a small pond to the left of the green.

?That was a bad finish,? he said. ?It (the round overall) was all right. ? But I drove the ball extremely bad. It?s the worst driving day I?ve had in a long time. I?m satisfied because I?ve been playing bad the last couple weeks. I was kind of skeptical how I was going to be today. I?m satisfied, but it was not my best round by far.?

Right behind Connelly and Allen are Evans and Kish. Evans is playing in his fourth straight Onslow Am, having finished second in 2009, while Kish, a 28-year-old Marine Corps sergeant, is playing in his first Onslow Am, having missed last year?s because he was deployed.

?I had four bad holes,? Evans said, ?two bogeys and a double bogey and only one birdie. You needed to make at least a couple more birdies to try to offset the not-so-good holes. But other than that, I?m happy with it considering where I would say the good players are or the people in my flight. Nobody?s running away with it so I?ve still got a shot.?

In fact, Evans said anyone within 4 strokes of the lead has a chance to win.

That would include Evans and Kish, who called his round ?OK,? noting he double-bogeyed the par-4 No. 15 ? the toughest-rated hole on the course ? and bogeyed No. 18.

?So I kind of left a couple out there,? Kish said. ?It should have been a little bit better than that, but I?m happy with 75.?
