Malawi's 'rain and mud' economic crisis | Malawi news, Malawi ...

In the local lingo, Malawi?s current economic tango fits plumb with the old saw; those who cry for rain should accept the mud it creates.

In 1994, Malawians ululated hoarse at the advent of multiparty. They had survived 31 years of keeping one step ahead of the police. Many had fallen foul of the dictatorship, even the innocent were not spared the gross human rights abuses, denied economic participation and government protection.

Euphoria was another new addition to the vocabulary. Almost in haze, dreamlike fashion, they discovered that democracy also meant choices in the economy. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of jobs were shed in what the experts suspiciously called downsizing.

State enterprises were sold to the private sector in order to expand the government?s narrow tax base, create efficiency in business and de-politicize (they didn?t say) state enterprises, which were uniformly unable to remit taxes, pay utility bills, city and ground rates, debtors and lacked liquidity for daily operations. They were gobbling up scarce at the cost of sustainable development.

As it were: Late president Mutharika and the then Vice President Joyce Banda ? now Malawi?s head of state on a mission to revive the economy

It was stark choice. State enterprise had existed for as long as Malawians could remember. The sale was inevitable retrenchment of workers who had become accustomed to this cradle-to-grave security style, the miserable pay-off and the struggle to get government to be more generous was to leave deep scars on the nation.

When the Agricultural and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) fell into the cross-hair of privatization, the convulsions were so serious that it was simply political Armageddon for the ruling party. It was seen mostly as denying most people their childhood noted Ghanaian economic Mohamed Hassan Mohamed.

Economics and emotions seemed to be strange bedfellows. However, the nationwide market of last resort was to reconstitute ADMARC Limited, its objectives largely as a food storage since it had a sound infrastructure covering the remotest of rural communities.

It had bowed down to the realities of a liberalized business environment where private companies participated in buying and selling farm produce particularly maize, the staple food.

ADMARC could not compete in prices offered to farmers by moneyed and enterprising upstarts, so to speak, many times buying at more than double prices offered by ADMARC, which was at the mercy of state subventions, inefficient system and prone to politically-charged demands. A truest political cow to be milked at will and inevitably increasing its liabilities.

For most part of the period of multiparty democracy from 1994, the government has had to try to tricky balance actions. Sometimes, it seemed nobody was in control. At others, it was quite the opposite; politicians were on top of things but at all times, nothing stood still long enough to keep the momentum of economic reforms ticking.

It was only after 2004, the third Republic, when over-ambitious schemes and unchecked excesses by State House blurred the dividing line between the economy and politics.

The highly inflammable mixture brought the country into a grinding halt and ruin. Traditional donors, lending agencies, and friendly nations brought the shutters crashing down while national unity was tested to breaking point.

It was a dramatic turn of events; some describe it as a national tragedy of the infamous Cabinet Crisis in 1964 when cabinet ministers dissented in Parliament leading to first widespread purge of people holding views different from Kamuzu Banda.

For the next three decades, the fear, uncertainty and suspicions never left Malawians. The collective psyche was badly rocked that nobody trusted anyone. The under-currents of that experience were traumatic and the country was in a perpetual lock-down of under-development, seeming duality and fatalism. Nothing good happened to Malawians.

As the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) was facing its last days, new President Mikhail Gorbachev (he of glasnost and perestroika) accountability and transparency in government cautioned the restive conglomeration of unwieldy states forming the rival super power status to the US and western bloc, ?we cannot solve old problems with old solutions?.

President Joyce Banda has also inherited a fair share of problems. Political questions although equally pressing for positive response, the economy is a different kettle of fish.

Mrs. Banda by and large, has to rely on the support of the international community with its largesse. However, economic injections are painful in the short and medium term.

The easy solution as Minister of Finance Ken Lipenga called the controversial Zero Deficit Budget had a balm effect but soon the pain became unbearable and to make matters worse, it eroded all hope from the people for better times in the foreseeable future.

There simply was no alternative to a devaluation of the local Kwacha currency in order to rekindle the following industries and growing shortages of essential good and commodities. Foreign exchange and fuel shortages were the most visible of the outcomes of the easy solution.

President Bingu wa Mutharika (may his soul rest in peace) had got it wrong and for a self-acclaimed ?economic engineer?, his legacy has suffered. He inadvertently exposed the nation?s soft under-belly and some quarters suggest that it will need all the tools Mrs. Banda has in her toolbox to win back suspicious investors, angry donors and reluctant friends to price out Malawi from the political quagmire that swallowed it like quick sand.

The President will be called upon to give much more than what many childhoods we recoil. It will be more or less as beginning again; a renew, rebirth of the nation which will suffer the horrible pangs of withdrawal like a baby from breastfeed to porridge.

However, the mere fact of being inflicted with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank conditionalities is no reason to kill the political goose that lays golden eggs.

Civil society and opposition political parties would be committing a disservice to the larger nation if they paint the picture of people suffering with a broad brush intended outcomes of the economic recovery programme.

The President has traversed the globe, lobbying and advocating a better deal for the poor of Malawi who will not be spared the negative repercussion through no fault of their own.

In fact, it?s about time civil society leaders shed the masquerade of human rights defenders while they willingly agitated and actively supported the rise of dictatorship that has brought the country to its knees.

They backed a constitutional imbalance, shredded the constitution and teamed up with the clergy, media and commercial organizations to abrogate the cardinal rule of democracy standards-majority rule-to achieve narrow political ambitions.

Their courage and honesty was displayed before the world when they vanished at the eleventh hour of a planned protest march which left over a score innocent and unarmed people dead, gunned down by a trigger-happy police.

In contrast, President Joyce Banda then Vice President was the stuff of leadership. She walked where angels fear to tread.

In her time as member of Mutharika?s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), she vehemently refused to bow down to her scheming superior, quit her position as DPP Secretary General, weathered conspiratorial scheme, braved persecution and numerous attempts of psychological and physical abuse.

There is no existing record when a high-ranked official has fought back the combined forces of the state and a ruling political party. Mrs. Banda did and came out like two fried eggs, sunny side up. Clearly, she was not terrified of not only losing her job but salary and prestige, which only Clement Chiwaya did as cabinet minister in 2005.

Mrs. Banda is prepared to live up to her dream that does not include the mere attainment of personal gratification even if it means selling out the people as the case is in civil society organizations. It would be an insult to the poor to give the impression that the President is being mean and does not care about their well-being. It?s almost criminal to tell the people that the rain they cry for will this time pour down without the accompanying mud.

In fact, the current state of economic hardship has been stopped by President Banda from getting into an uncontrolled and uncontrollable tailspin. It will not be a permanent state of affairs although it certainly will call on everyone to pull in the same directions.

If it?s about campaign 2014, many, if not the majority of eligible voters, have already made up their mind.

CSN: Will frigid Detroit cool off SF in Game 3?

October 27, 2012, 1:49 pm

PRATTa.png

Programming note: Tune in to SportsNet Central's OctoberQuest at 4 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. We'll take you all the way up to first pitch at 5:07 p.m. with all the pregame news, stats, updates and analysis. It's Game 3 of the World Series!

DETROIT -- The Tigers can act calm and say they are happy to be home all they want. The simple fact of the matter is 53 times a team has taken a 2-0 lead in the World Series, 41 of those teams have gone on to win it all. That's a 78.8 percent chance of failure for the Tigers. ?

The last eight teams to take a 2-0 lead have won the Fall Classic. The odds simply aren't in Detroit's favor. The Giants have won five consecutive postseason games for the first time in franchise history. The Tigers have lost their last six World Series games dating back to 2006.

[GAME THREE LINEUPS: As expected, Sanchez to DH]

It's all stacked up against them.

"I try to keep it simple," Tigers' manager Jim Leyland said. "We are two down with five to play, and we are playing the team we've got to catch."

So what do the Tigers have in their favor, if anything? While the Giants are hotter than a piston powering a Detroit-made Ford Mustang, the game time temperate is expected to be frigid enough to seize their motors -- 46 degrees. A temperature that Prince Fielder described as "perfect."

Game Three starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez is 3-1 in five starts with a 1.98 ERA in his career against the Giants. The weather could be a wild card for him too. Sanchez went 5-7 with a 4.52 ERA in 15 home starts after being traded to the Tigers from the Marlins.

"I'm a little concerned because of the layoff, the cold weather," Leyland said of his Game Three starter. "You don't know how either pitcher is going to react to that."

Home field advantage will be the Tigers' last hope. They are 4-0 at Comerica Park in the playoffs, but even if they win all three games here in Detroit, they will have to head to San Francisco to face a Giants team that has won their last six home World Series games dating back to 2010.

A by-product of the trip back to the Motor City is the use of the DH. Delmon Young's defense didn't kill them in left field, although, he made one embarrassing throw in Game One that more closely resembled a frayed piece of twine than a froze rope. He gets to go back to the role that suits him best, and the Tigers' pitchers are no longer an empty spot in the lineup. Having the DH improves the Tigers both offensively and defensively.

Lineup

Quintin Berry, LF
Miguel Cabrera, 3B
Prince Fielder, 1B
Delmon Young, DH
Andy Dirks, RF
Jonny Peralta, SS

Environmental Education for Sustainable Future Towards 21stCentury

We have built a society, which is violent & explosive .We are living in extremely explosive times the world is in confusion and human beings are driven by the power of egocentric behavior. The large scale exploitation of nature, population growth, accelerated development of productive forces, the ever increasing destruction of natural resources for human comfort has lead to depletion and degradation of natural environment bringing in a dangerous ecological imbalance in the man environment system.

The ecological crisis and increasing poverty, hunger and violence are forcing man inevitably to face the realities of the human situation. The whole human life ??? politically, economically, socially, environmentally and even culturally ? appears to be in a state of turmoil and seems to be going through a very grave crisis.

  • At this rate what will happen in the next millennium?

Human values (cultural, moral & spiritual values) are eroding at very fast rate resulting in declining the quality of life of the people. At the dawn of the new millennium, what is required most is ???Peace & Sustainability?. Environmental Education for sustainability plays an important role in building peace & harmony and developing nonviolent global sustainable society

According to the 1989 Brundtland Commission Report, sustainability refers to meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

?It encompasses economic, social, institutional and environmental dimensions of society and stresses the ways educational and academic institutions can be adapted to provide a more collaborative and supportive role to enable sustainability.? Thus when we talk about Sustainability, we mean the sustainability of the human race, not the planet, and even more concretely, the sustainability of a civilized and prosperous humanity.

  • What is Sustainable Development?

Sustainable development has been defined in many ways, but the most frequently quoted definition is from Our Common Future, also known as the Brundtland Report. ?Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It contains within it two key concepts:

  • The concept of needs, in particular the essential needs of the world?s poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and
  • The idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment?s ability to meet present and future needs.?
  • The Role of Education in the Pursuit of a Sustainable Future

?Education is a key and vital element in moving sustainability forward???? as per the Report of the UN Secretary General

  • Agenda 21(Rio)
  • UN Millennium Goals
  • Earth Charter
  • UN Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD)
  • WSSD (Johannesburg)
  • WSSD: Reaffirming the Role of Education :

Education as the foundation of sustainable development was reaffirmed at the WSSD. The Plan of Implementation recognized education as critical for sustainable development in its own right, but also saw education as a key agent for change and a tool for addressing such questions as gender equality, rural development, health care, HIV/AIDS and consumption patterns. The Plan also called for synergy among global initiatives in education, specifically mentioning theDakra Framework for Action on Education for All (EFA)  , in which literacy, gender issues, and quality education play central roles and are essential for sustainable development and the Millennium Development Goals   on universal primary education. Finally, the Plan recommended that the UN General Assembly consider adopting a Decade of Education for Sustainable Development starting in 2005.

  • Why Environmental Education?

Education for Sustainable development

?Education for Life
Education through Life
Education throughout Life?- Said
Mahatma Gandhi

?Education is a human right. Education is the primary agent of transformation towards sustainable development, increasing people?s capacities to transform their visions for society into reality.?

  • Four major thrusts of Education for Sustainable Development?

Chapter 36 of Agenda 21, adopted at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio, is devoted to ???Promoting Education, Public Awareness and Training?.

It identifies four major thrusts of Education for Sustainable Development:

1.       Promotion and Improvement of Basic Education;

2.       Reorienting Existing Education at all Levels to Address Sustainable Development;

3.       Developing Public Understanding and Awareness of Sustainability;&

4.       Training ?  Training the workforce with knowledge and skills to perform their work in a sustainable manner

  • The Decade of Education for Sustainable Development 2005-2014

?Education at all levels can shape the world of tomorrow????  UNESCO. The UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is an international recognition of the key role that Education and Communication can play in enabling and enhancing sustainable development efforts, and processes leading towards these. ?Our biggest challenge in this new century is to take an idea that seems abstract ? sustainable development ? and turn it into a reality for all the world?s people.? Kofi Annan, UNSG, 2001

  • The Education for Sustainable Development:

Originally perceived as education about sustainability, it is being increasingly recognized, through the influence of Agenda 21 and the World Summit on Sustainable Development, as more than the dissemination of knowledge.

  • Education at all levels can shape the world of tomorrow, equipping individuals and societies with the skills, perspectives, knowledge and values to live and work in a sustainable manner.
  • Education for sustainable development (ESD) is a dynamic concept ?that utilizes all aspects of public awareness, education and training to create or enhance an understanding of the linkages among the issues of sustainable development.
  • Education for sustainable development is a vision of education ?that seeks to balance human and economic well-being with cultural traditions and respect for the earth?s natural resources.?

Education teaches people to be better individuals, family members, community members and citizens. Education not only provides scientific and technical skills, it also provides the motivation, justification, and social support for pursuing and applying them. The international community now strongly believes that we need to foster ??? through education ??? the values, behaviour and lifestyles required for a sustainable future.

Shark kills surfer Francisco Javier Solorio Jr. off Surf Beach in California

After a rash of shark sightings this year in California, one man is dead after an attack today near Surf Beach northwest of Los Angeles.

The Associated Press identified the man as 39-year-old Francisco Javier Solorio Jr., who died after the shark bit him in the chest or torso.

?A friend who he was surfing with who saw the shark bite or hit the man ? ended up swimming over and pulling him from the water where he received first aid,? Sgt. Mark A. Williams told the AP.

The attack happened near Vandenberg Air Force Base, but Solorio was not a soldier or employee there, military officials told the AP.

More from GlobalPost: Sharks to be killed on site in Western Australia

The Air Force allows public access to some of its beaches, CNN said, and the base fire department responded to the call for help.

There was no confirmation on what kind of shark attacked the surfers, although authorities did say they found bite marks on Solorio's?s surfboard.

The attack happened today about 11 am in Lompoc, 150 miles northwest of LA, ABC News said.

A wildlife expert would work Wednesday to determine what kind of shark is responsible, ABC reported.

Officials issued warnings after shark attacks on separate kayakers in May and July, the AP said.

A surfer spotted a 14-foot Great White last month, prompting authorities in Santa Barbara Harbor to post warning signs.

Two years ago near Surf Beach, 19-year-old university student Lucas Ransom died after a shark nearly severed his leg, AP said.

Surf Beach was closed until further notice Tuesday.

"We've had shark sightings up and down the Santa Barbara coastline pretty frequently recently," Lt. Erik Raney told the AP.

Twitter principles of social networking increase family success in nesting birds

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

New research carried out by scientists at Universities in Exeter, France and Switzerland reveals for the first time the importance of social networking in producing a successful family.

The study found that, regardless of how big and healthy individual chicks are, what really matters to their chances of surviving and breeding is how siblings in the nest interact with each other, with cooperative families faring best.

Differences in patterns of feeding between mothers and fathers were a key factor in determining the behaviour of their offspring, according to the study published online today in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Mothers selected weaker, hungrier nestlings while fathers did the opposite, choosing those who were the most competitive.

Dr Nick Royle, from the University of Exeter, was involved in the study, alongside scientists from Universities in Toulouse, Bern and Basel. He said: "Whilst it is well-established that large, strong offspring are generally expected to be more successful than small, less well-nourished offspring, it has not been previously shown that the success of both individuals and families as a whole depends on the structure of social interactions among offspring."

"As any parent knows, parental care can be hard work and there is often a squeeze on the availability of resources in families. This sets the scene for conflicts of interest among family members over how these resources are allocated. Our study shows that the most successful families are those that are best at resolving these conflicts; parents and offspring that are most effective at responding to each other are the most successful."

Scientists from the University of Exeter's Centre for Ecology & Conservation worked with colleagues from the Universities of Basel and Bern in Switzerland and the French Universit? Paul Sabatier alongside French scientific research organisation CNRS. It was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council and the Swiss National Science Foundation.

63 broods of begging great tits breeding in nest boxes in woods around Bern in Switzerland were filmed when the nestlings were 10 days old, when both parents feed the young using different methods of selecting which nestlings receive food. The researchers examined the network of social interaction between the siblings, and then monitored the parents and their offspring to see whether they survived and went on to breed the following year.

Great tit mothers prefer to feed hungrier, smaller nestlings whereas fathers choose stronger, larger nestlings to feed. So in families where mothers provide most of the food, the young are more 'gregarious'. They moved around more and interacted more strongly with one another as the hungrier nestlings tried to move closer to their mothers to be fed. In broods where fathers fed more than mothers, nestlings moved around much less because the more competitive offspring took up the best positions near him.

Small and medium-sized broods fared better when the mother was the main feeder, whilst larger broods were more successful when the father provided most of the feeds. This could be because of constraints on space in larger families, making it harder for chicks to move around and jostle for position and easier to respond to fathers, with their simpler feeding rules, not mothers.

Dr Nick Royle concluded: "Users of Twitter will know that the more interactions they have, the more successful their profile is likely to be, and it's similar for nesting great tits; at least at nests where mothers provide most of the feeds. When fathers do most of the work offspring are much less gregarious. For young great tits social networking is related to the amount of physical contact each nestling has with their siblings, not the amount of tweeting they do. But using our social networks measure enabled us to demonstrate a novel link between how family members interact with one another and the success of those families."

"Our approach is not just applicable to social interactions in birds, however, or just for families. It could also be applied to understanding what patterns of social organisation best determine success between competing groups of humans, such as in business or team sports."

3rd parties: Get money out of politics (and maybe legalize weed)

"Did we have opening statements," former CNN and current Ora.tv host Larry King asked after candidates at Tuesday's minor-party debate in Chicago had each answered the first question.

"Unfortunately, no," debate co-host Christina Tobin of the Free and Equal Elections Foundation answered. "Grassroots!"

"OK, this will be the opening statement, and then we'll go to the second question," King said, and that was that.

So it went onstage at the Hilton Chicago, where Tobin's group hosted a debate between four minor-party presidential candidates who have made the ballot in enough states to win the presidency: Green Party candidate Jill Stein, Libertarian Party candidate and former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, Constitution Party candidate and former Virginia congressman of both the Republican and Democratic parties Virgil Goode, and Justice Party candidate Rocky Anderson.

Free and Equal will host a "runoff" debate in Washington, D.C., Tuesday between the two candidates who receive the most votes on the group's website, FreeandEqual.org.

The candidates beat up not only on the two major parties, but on mainstream policies. Free college education, term limits, marijuana legalization and an end to political action committees were among the ideas proposed at Tuesday night's debate, which was broadcast by C-SPAN, Russia TV, and Al Jazeera English.

"We've all suffered through the sellout of our government to Wall Street," Anderson, 61 and a former Salt Lake City, Utah, mayor, said. "Young people are burdened with crushing, record tuition debt. Millions of families have lost their homes ? while Wall Street fat cats who are buying our elections have made out like bandits."

"When it comes to political campaign contributions, the candidates should be required to wear NASCAR-like jackets with patches on the jackets commensurate" to contributions, Johnson said. "Regardless of whether or not Romney gets elected or Obama gets elected ? we're going to find ourselves with a continued, heightened police state in this country; we're going to find ourselves continuing to militarily intervene in the world, which has resulted in hundreds of millions of enemies to this country that wouldn't otherwise exist."

Opposition to political money was on full display across the stage.

"I want to pass an amendment that clarifies that money is not speech and corporations are not people," said the Green Parry's Stein, 62, a Massachusetts physician.

Former Virginia congressman Goode, 66, said, "I'm for no political action committees; individual contributions only. No super PACs. And I believe Congress can craft legislation with presidential leadership to stop political action committees."

Goode was the only candidate onstage not to support marijuana legalization, a major plank in Johnson's Libertarian platform, and the major plank when he began touring college campuses in advance of his run for president in early 2011.

"Let's end the drug wars. Legalize marijuana now," the former Republican 59, said. "Let's repeal the PATRIOT Act. I would have never signed the National Defense Authorization Act, allowing you and I, as U.S. citizens, to be arrested and detained without being charged. That's the reason we fought wars in this country."

The full political spectrum was on display, from Stein's support for free, government-funded college education and a "Green New Deal," to Anderson's proposal of a WPA-like program and protections from sexual-orientation discrimination, to Goode's insistence that the government can't afford more Pell education grants, to Johnson's call for a 43-percent cut in military spending and opposition to government's involvement in marriage and drug policy.

The common thread was opposition to corporations, political spending and staid power structures.

"Imagine if there had been a candidate included in the Obama-Romney debates to challenge our plutocracy, our government that is run by and for the benefit of monstrous corporations rather than in the interest of the people of this country," Anderson said in his closing remarks.

Larry King offered a compliment, and a literary comparison.

"You're kind of Don Quixotes in a way," King said, "but the windmills have a way of stopping, and we have a way of saluting you just for getting into the fray."

Should You Choose Reports Sites Over Traditional Newspaper ...

You are here: Home / General / Should You Choose Reports Sites Over Traditional Newspaper?

News web sites are becoming a rage these days because one can simply log onto the internet site and get updates on latest occurrences around the planet. News report sites not only help in keeping us informed but they also have tons of photographs and videos, which you can hardly see on local papers. Local newspapers have space issues due to which they have to cover many news on the front page. They often don't publish the whole story on the first page and you are asked to read more on pages inside the paper. Well that's not right with news sites; here you can read the whole stories coverage together with photographs that give you a better vision of what essentially occurred. It makes you feel as though you were present on the location.

News websites are also divided into classes; these categories make navigation easy and allow the users to choose the class they are interested in reading. Together with latest headings and stories giving complete coverage, you can also read extra articles on health, beauty, sports, science, technology, and so on. These articles are common and give tips and advices to make your life stress free and simple.

Many of us, both men and women are interested in seeing the celebs, the attire they wear and what they are up to? News report websites unlike the ordinary news papers let you see plenty of pictures of celebs at different events. You also get chance to comment and share latest news and leave your opinion about a specific post.

The nicest thing about reports sites is that they are interactive; people from around the world debate a situation, and give their opinion and view on a specific subject. This permits reports tellers to realise how general public is feeling. This social interaction is pretty much impossible with general newspapers. That explains why, more people now tune into reports sites to get updates.

Also you can register your e-mail ID on these stories sites to get latest updates in your mail. You can also follow a selected post if you wish to get alerts on a particular subject. With so many news sites developing online, you need to pick them carefully. Not all sites update every hour. Most of the well-liked sites update every minute or so and also send alerts on your phones if you have downloaded their applications. You can also choose to view what?s new section on the sites to get the newest gig. You need to select a site conscientiously by investing time and comparing a few sites and decide which one of them posts first. It would probably take few hours for you to understand which one is the swiftest and the absolute best.

There are several techniques thru which you can stay updated through news website by following a post twitter updates for example. So if you don't have an hour to spare to read your daily newspaper every morning don?t worry you can visit my blog http://bestonlinenews.wordpress.com and read most critical news from best news websites.

I'll have a posting order made before we get things rolling, we may not get up to 11 or more though so no real reason to worry about that yet.

As for balance, this game will be strictly RP, and doesn't have to adhere to the rules quite as much as if we brought out the books and dice. If I find a character that I believe is OP or broken in any way I'll whip out the nerf-stick and beat it until everyone's happy.

The classes, every base class is up for grabs IF you can make it believable. Minotaur psions and pixie samurai will need an excellent backstory before I say yes. As for prestige, and multiclassing, as we progress through the storyline PM me about it and I'll try to squeeze in some NPC trainers... I'm pretty much open to everything at this point, there's a lot more freedom to be had since it's going to be strictly roleplay.

All that I ask is that the characters be believable.

Astronomers study 2 million light year 'extragalactic afterburner'

Blasting over two million lights years from the centre of a distant galaxy is a supersonic jet of material that looks strikingly similar to the afterburner flow of a fighter jet, except in this case the jet engine is a supermassive black hole and the jet material is moving at nearly the speed of light.

Research published over the weekend in the Astrophysical Journal Letters shows the galaxy-scale jet to have bright and dark regions, similar to the phenomenon in an afterburner exhaust called 'shock diamonds.'

A new image of the previously studied jet reveals regularly spaced areas that are brighter than the rest of the jet in a pattern that echoes the way the afterburner from a jet engine has brighter diamond-shaped areas in its general glow.

"One intriguing possibility is that the pattern we see in this cosmic jet is produced in the same way as the pattern in the exhaust from fighter jet engines," said Dr Leith Godfrey, from the Curtin University node of The International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research.

Dr Godfrey said the jets are produced when material falls onto a supermassive black hole at the centre of a galaxy, but many details beyond that remain unknown.

"Massive jets like this one have been studied for decades, since the beginning of radio astronomy, but we still don't understand exactly how they are produced or what they're made of," he said.

"If the brighter patches are caused by the same process in astronomical jets as they are in earthly jet engines, then the distance between them can give us important information about the power of the jet and the density of the surrounding space."

Dr Godfrey said that jets like the one he studied are the largest objects in the Universe, about 100 times larger than the Milky Way.

"If we want to understand how galaxies form and grow, we need to understand these jets. They are extremely powerful and are believed to stop stars forming in their parent galaxy, limiting how big the galaxies can grow and effecting how the Universe looks today," he said.

"This new image of the jet shows detail we've never seen before and the pattern we revealed provides a clue to how jets like this one work," said Dr Jim Lovell, a co-author from the University of Tasmania.

"This particular jet emits a lot of X-rays, which is hard to explain with our current models. Our new find is a step forward in understanding how these giant objects emit so much X-Ray radiation, and indirectly, will help us understand how the jet came to be."

Dr Lovell said that the image had been taken using the CSIRO managed Australia Telescope Compact Array radio telescope in New South Wales.

'Paranormal Activity 4' is for diehard fans only, falls short in franchise ...

Dave Steele

Dave Steele

By Dave Steele
dsteele@kykernel.com

?Paranormal Activity 4? opens by recapping the final moments of ?Paranormal Activity 2,? by replaying the abduction of Hunter by his demon-possessed aunt Katie.

Five years later, the whereabouts of Hunter and Katie are unknown.

Meanwhile, a family in Nevada is filming their son, Wyatt, playing a game of little league soccer. After the game, a strange boy named Robbie follows the family home and starts playing in their elaborate tree house.

Later that night, Wyatt?s big sister, Alex, and her friend, Ben, find Robbie standing alone in the house with the locked door wide open. Alex realizes that Robbie belongs to the family who just moved in across the street and walks him home.

A few days later, an unexplained event lands Robbie?s mother in the hospital and the family decides to take him in until she is released.

Night after night, Alex notices unexplainable sounds and movements within the house. In hopes of uncovering the source of the activity, Alex, with the help of her tech-savvy friend Ben, rig every computer in the house to constantly record via their Web chat cameras. After reviewing the footage, Alex and Ben realize that Robbie has invited a paranormal entity into their house.

This franchise is clearly running out of ideas. ?Paranormal Activity 4? utilizes the minimal, yet hauntingly realistic, special effects that have brought so much success to the series.

However, the execution is a repetitive drag that teases viewers without adding a shred of fresh intrigue.

There is a lack of elaboration that makes this latest installment worthy of a straight-to-DVD release. No plot, just footage. Audiences will come to realize that this now guilty-pleasure-esque series would fair better in a Bravo timeslot after ?Real Housewives? than on the silver screen.

It?s that bad.

Not ?so bad it?s good,? just plain bad. It follows the same fatal approach that made the second film stick out like a sore thumb in the series. It wastes 90 percent of the movie dragging it?s feet ?building up? to an indifferent ending that is carried out in a matter of seconds.

?Paranormal Activity 4? rides the coattails of the franchise?s captivating first and third installments and falls flat on its face in the process.

Luckily the chemistry of Ben (Matt Shively) and Alex (Kathryn Newton) is funny enough to fend off an 88-minute nap.

This film is definitely for diehard fans of the franchise. Unfortunately for them, this series has the consistency of a coin toss. If the trend continues, ?Paranormal Activity 5? should be a hit.

1/5 stars

Protesters break into grounds of Libya's parliament

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - About 500 protesters broke into the grounds of Libya's parliament building on Sunday to demand an end to violence in Bani Walid, a former stronghold of Muammar Gaddafi that is being shelled by militiamen from a rival town.

Militias, many from Misrata and aligned with the Defence Ministry, have been shelling the hilltop town of 70,000 people for several days. State news agency LANA said on Sunday 22 people had been killed and 200 wounded in the fighting.

"We are here to demand the government find a peaceful solution for the tribal war that is happening in Bani Walid," protester Nasser Ehdein said.

Libya's new rulers have led the nation to elections but have struggled to impose their authority on a country awash with weapons a year after Gaddafi was captured and killed.

Underscoring the chaos in the country, there were conflicting reports over the weekend over the fate of Gaddafi's former spokesman and his son.

While Misrata spent weeks under siege by Gaddafi forces in last year's war, Bani Walid was one of the towns that remained loyal to Gaddafi longest. It remains isolated from the rest of Libya and former rebels say it still harbors pockets of support for the old government.

The unarmed group of male and female protesters forced their way past security guards at the gates of the grounds of the parliament buildings in Tripoli, chanting "There is no God but God, and President (Mohammed) Magarief is God's enemy."

Security forces shot rounds into the air as they held their positions at the doors of the building, while elected members of the General National Congress met inside.

Ehdein said most of the protesters were residents of Tripoli who had family in or hailed from Bani Walid.

This is the second time protesters have broken into the grounds of the assembly since it took power in the summer.

The first time was on October 4 when a group of protesters who believed their town was underrepresented in a proposed Libyan government stormed the assembly as it prepared to scrutinize the prime minister-elect's nominations.

ROCKETS

Bani Walid militia leader Abdelkarim Ghomaid said the attacks were continuing in the town, 140 km south of Tripoli.

"The shelling is coming from all sides," he said by phone.

A Bani Walid resident said by phone: "Fighting is continuing today. There is smoke rising over certain parts of the city."

Outside Bani Walid, hundreds of vehicles lined up in the village of Weshtata, 80 km (50 miles) from Tripoli, waiting to be checked by government forces as families fled the fighting.

"We are escaping the danger of the rockets, the shrapnel, and the deaths inside. There hasn't been electricity for days," said one man who had his family in a pick-up truck.

The feud between the towns was inflamed by the death of rebel Omran Shaban after two months in detention in Bani Walid. Shaban, from Misrata, was the man who found Gaddafi hiding in a drain pipe in Sirte on October 20, 2011.

Libya's congress ordered the Defence and Interior Ministries to find those responsible for abducting Shaban and suspected of torturing him. It gave Bani Walid a deadline to hand them over.

Hundreds of families have also fled the fighting in Bani Walid to Tarhouna, some 80 km away, where a statement from the prime minister's office on Saturday said militias had captured former Gaddafi spokesman Moussa Ibrahim.

However, in an audio clip posted on Facebook, a person purporting to be Ibrahim, who held news conferences in Tripoli during the war, dismissed news of his arrest.

There was no independent verification of the authenticity or timing of the Facebook post, dated October 20.

Some officials said Gaddafi's son Khamis had been captured in Bani Walid and died after being taken to Misrata, however there was no official written statement from the government on this, as with previous captures of former regime figures.

On Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister Mustafa Abushagur said on his official Twitter account the announcement of Ibrahim's arrest and Khamis's death was made without confirmation of the news.

Khamis was reported dead on at least three separate occasions during last year's conflict. A Syrian-based television station that supported Gaddafi said he had been killed in fighting southeast of Tripoli on August 29, 2011.

Barclays cuts Microsoft price target, others await Windows 8 launch

(Reuters) - Barclays Capital cut its price target on Microsoft Inc's stock after the world's largest software company reported a greater-than-expected dip in its quarterly profit.

However, most brokerages maintained their ratings and price targets on the stock ahead of next week's Windows 8 launch, described by Credit Agricole Securities as the most comprehensive product refresh cycle in Microsoft's history.

Microsoft reported a 22 percent drop in profit on Thursday due to a fall in sales of computers running the Windows operating system in a weak PC market.

First-quarter sales fell 8 percent to $16.01 billion and some revenue was deferred ahead of upcoming releases of its core Windows and Office products.

Shares of the company, which closed at $29.49 on Thursday on the Nasdaq, were set to open 2 percent lower on Friday.

While the weakness in the Windows business was expected, the poor showing by the Office business and the server and tools division was a surprise, Barclays analyst Raimo Lenschow.

Lenschow lowered his price target on the stock to $34 from $36, but maintained his "equal weight" rating.

"... We still prefer to wait on the sidelines until after the Windows 8 launch next week," he said in a note.

Microsoft is betting on the release of the touch-friendly Windows 8, which will also run on tablets, to break its heavy reliance on PC sales.

PC sales are expected to fall this year for the first time since 2001, according to research firm IHS , due to the weak economy and the inability of the latest crop of lightweight laptops to compete with Apple Inc's iPad.

Microsoft needs to be successful in tablets to mitigate structural concerns of eroding market share and margin in its core Windows and Office businesses, Lenschow added.

Lenschow is rated four stars for the accuracy of his estimates on Microsoft's earnings, according to Thomson Reuters Starmine.

Analysts at Credit Agricole said they were looking beyond the first-quarter results and expected momentum to build through financial year 2013.

Jefferies analyst Ross MacMillan said he was "yet to be convinced on Windows 8" and maintained his "hold" rating on the stock.

While Microsoft's Surface tablet, expected to go on sale on October 26, holds much promise, it may need some time to work out the issues that have historically characterized new Microsoft offerings, J.P. Morgan analyst John DiFucci said.

"We are not assuming much impact of Surface to our model at this time other than what is implied as cannibalism of our current Windows PC expectations," DiFucci said.
